چکیده

We present new cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy results from the combined analysis of the three flights of the first Medium Scale Anisotropy Measurement (MSAM1). This balloon-borne bolometric instrument measured about 10 square degrees of sky at half-degree resolution in 4 frequency bands from 5.2 cm to 20 cm with a high signal-to-noise ratio. Here we present an overview of our analysis methods, compare the results from the three flights, derive new constraints on the CMB power spectrum from the combined data and reduce the data to total power Wiener-filtered maps of the CMB. A key feature of this new analysis is a determination of the amplitude of CMB fluctuations at l ∼ 400. The analysis technique is described in a companion paper (Knox 1999). Subject headings: balloons — cosmic microwave background — cosmology: observations — infrared: ISM: continuum

A recalibration of the luminosity–linewidth technique is discussed which introduces (i) new cluster calibration data, (ii) new corrections for reddening as a function of inclination, and (iii) a new zero-point calibration using 13 galaxies with distances determined via the cepheid period– luminosity method. It is found that H 0 = 82 ± 16 km s −1 Mpc −1 (95% confidence).

Research on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is progressing rapidly. New experimental groups are popping up and two new satellites will be launched. The current enthusiasm to measure fluctuations in the CMB power spectrum at angular scales between 0 • .1 and 1 • is largely motivated by the expectation that CMB determinations of cosmological parameters will be of unprecedented precision: co...

Broad band spectra of total and compact–scale radio emission from blazars, used in combination with kinematic information inferred from VLBI monitoring programs, can be applied successfully to better constrain the models of compact jets. We discuss here a " hands-on " approach for tying together the kinematic and spectral properties of radio emission from blazars.
